Dear Friend,

The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation (CAHF) understands that it is not enough to fill the bellies of children and families in need. It is critical that they are being nourished with fresh high-quality fruits and vegetables, lean meats and other protein sources necessary to grow strong and healthy. The consequences of failure to make good nutritional choices are that many inner-city poor and their children are at risk for diabetes and heart disease.

Because of these realities, CAHF has embarked on an effort that will change the face of emergency food distribution. Our new policy dictates that we will only provide fresh, first-quality produce, lean meats and other protein sources to member agencies. Food distribution will not include cookies, candy, cake, soda pop, or potato chips. No junk food…ever.

Changing the face of emergency food distribution comes with new challenges and additional costs. Two of those challenges are the fact that the demand for emergency food assistance has increased while the cost of food, particularly healthy food, has skyrocketed. 

The outcome, however, is well worth it.  We encourage everyone who cares about providing those in need with nutritional food, to join us as we lead in this new direction.
