[Annual Turkey Trot]

[Turkey Trot Photo]The Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot exists to support the food pantries of the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation, the homeless shelters of Dupage PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), and needy families and seniors identified by the United Community Concerns Association.

Seniors living on a fixed income choose prescription medication over food at the end of the month. Children continue to go to bed hungry at an alarming rate, making it impossible to perform well in school, contributing to illiteracy and juvenile delinquency.

In the Chicago Metropolitan Area, 70 percent of those needing food and shelter are children and seniors, two groups often not in charge of their own destiny. We, as a team, continue to take care of our own.

[Turkey Trot Photo]“Over the last 24 years, the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot has raised over $1.1 million for needy families throughout Chicagoland. We believe the popularity and growth of the event as well as the need of the hungry has positioned us to reach the $2 million goal in time for the event’s 30th anniversary in 2012, “ according to Dan Gibbons, the race founder and namesake.

“Hunger is silent and often invisible. Tragically, it often affects our most vulnerable populations, like children and seniors. Many of those in need are either unable or unwilling to ask for help. We all know that hunger occurs in the inner-city, but it is also happening in Elmhurst and other suburban communities and may even be an issue with our next door neighbor,” Gibbons added.
