[Healthy Food Distribution]

[Distribution Image]The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation serves an average of 150,000 hungry people each month. Through our efforts, many children, seniors and other family members are able to eat 3.6 million meals each year.

In 2007 we created a curriculum named Project Newtrition designed to educate our clients about healthy eating. The curriculum development process reinforced what we have known instinctively for years... that fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables and lean protein sources are an important part of a healthy diet. Unfortunately, what we learned is that many inner-city poor put their children and themselves at-risk for diabetes and heart disease because they do not have access to healthy foods, and when they do, they often still fail to make good nutritional choices. In 2008, the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation made the decision to accept, purchase, and distribute only healthy, nutritional food throughout the organization's emergency food distribution process. In doing so, the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation has set a new direction for the organization and for the future of emergency food distribution.

Additionally, the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation will not accept or distribute any food that has been deemed unfit for sale. You wouldn't serve a child a bruised peach and neither would we. The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation supplies only high-quality fruit, vegetables, protein, and staples to 160 member agencies including food pantries, emergency shelters, and soup kitchens throughout Chicagoland.
